Winter At The Beach Weather Science Experiment
In this fun and easy science experiment, we’re going to explore and investigate weather by learning why it is milder near the ocean in the winter.
Materials:
- One empty drinking glass
- One drinking glass filled with water
Instructions:
- Put the two glasses in the refrigerator for twenty minutes.
- Remove the glasses. The glass with the water feels warmer.
- The glass filled with water stays warm longer. In the same way, oceans stay warm longer keeping the areas near the coast warmer.

How it Works:
It takes more heat to break the hydrogen bonds of water and increase the temperature of water than is needed to heat land. Since it takes more heat to increase the temperature of water, this mean water has a higher heat capacity than land. Consequently, large bodies of water like the ocean heat up or cool down much more slowly than land masses.

Add salt to water. Add dish soap to the water.
