Why Is Winter Colder Than Summer Weather Science Experiment

In this fun and easy weather science experiment, we’re going to explore and investigate why winter is colder than summer. 

 

Materials:

  • Two tin can lids
  • Black paint




Instructions:

  1. Paint both sides of each lid black and allow them to dry.
  2. Once dry, tilt one lid up so its faces directly at the sun.
  3. Lay the other lid flat on the ground in the same sunny area.
  4. Wait ten minutes and then touch the lids.

How it Works:

The lid facing the sun gets much hotter. In the winter, the sun’s rays do not hit the Earth as directly as they do in the summer. Thus winters are generally colder than summers.
