Snow On The Pond Easy Science Experiment

In this fun and easy science experiment for kids, we’re going to see if we can use science to clear snow from our pond. 

 

Materials:

  • Plate
  • Water
  • Baby powder
  • Bar of soap



Instructions:

  1. Fill the dinner plate with water.
  2. Sprinkle a dusting of baby powder over the surface of the water.
  3. Rub the tip of your finger on the soap.
  4. Now touch the soap into the center of the water and observe what occurs.

How it Works:

The baby powder is hydrophobic and does not dissolve or mix immediately in the water. The soap breaks the surface tension of the water and sends the water molecules away from the soap. As the water molecules move away from the soap, they carry the baby powder with them.
