Scared Cinnamon

Explore surface tension in this super simple and fun little science experiment. This is a great activity for kids to have fun learning about surface tension. Watch the cinnamon run scared when the dish soap is introduced and the surface tension gets broken.

Materials:

  • Cinnamon
  • Bowl
  • Water

How it Works:

When the cinnamon is sprinkled in the water, it stays on top because of the surface tension of the water. When the liquid dish soap is introduced, the surface tension breaks sending the cinnamon in all directions.

Make This A Science Project:

What happens if you use a a different spice such as pepper? What happens if you use a different liquid instead of water? Test different things to see if they break the surface tension of the water.
