Revolution Versus Rotation Rocket Science And Space Science Experiment

In this fun and easy rocket science and space science experiment for kids, we’re going to explore revolution versus rotation.

Materials:

  • Practice golf ball
  • Pipe cleaner

Instructions:

  1. Thread a plastic practice golf ball on a pipe cleaner. Tie the pipe cleaner closed by twisting the ends together to create a loop.

  2. To demonstrate revolution, slide the ball around the pipe cleaner.

  3. To demonstrate rotation, spin the ball.

How it Works:

This simple and easy experiment illustrates the important difference between the terms rotation and revolution. Rotation is when an object spins on its own axis. When the Earth completes a full rotation by spinning on its own axis, a full twenty hour day has passed.  Revolution refers to when an object moves around another object. The Earth revolves around the Sun. One full revolution of the Earth around the Sun is 365 days which is one year.

Make This A Science Project:

Identify things that rotate. Identify things that revolve around other things.
