Lemon Penny Polish Easy Science Experiment
In this fun and easy science experiment for kids, we’re going to try and polish a penny with a lemon and a little bit of science.
- Dull penny
- Cut the lemon in half.
- Squeeze the lemon juice into the glass.
- Put the dull penny in the glass for about five minutes.
- Remove the penny and observe any changes.
How it Works:
Pennies are made of copper. Copper oxidizes when exposed to oxygen and this process makes the penny look dirty. The citric acid in lemon juice removes the oxidation which makes the penny shiny.
Make This A Science Project:
Try different types of juices. Try using brass or other metal items. Try adding salt to the lemon juice.
