How it Works:

The cocoa powder contains fat which gives the cocoa powder a hydrophobic quality. Hydrophobic means “scared of water” and it is called this because water does not penetrate easily. This is why when you tape the handle of the spoon the layer of water seems to magically fall off leaving the cocoa powder underneath perfectly dry.

Make This A Science Project:

Will the cocoa powder behave the same way in other liquids? Will the addition of something in the water such as a detergent change the behavior of the cocoa powder. Test other items for hydrophobic properties.
