Cork Challenge Easy Science Experiment

In this fun and easy science experiment for kids, we’re going to take on a cork challenge and see if we can keep a cork centered in a glass of water and away from the edge.

Materials:

  • Cork
  • Glass
  • Water
  • Teaspoon

Instructions:

  1. Fill the glass nearly full with water.
  2. Do your best to get the cork to float in the center of the glass without touching the edge.
  3. You can even blow on the cork to try and keep it centered.
  4. Eventually the cork will hit the side of the glass.
  5. Now add water a teaspoon at a time and observe what happens.

How it Works:

As you add small amounts of water to the glass, the surface tension will rise above the rim of the glass. This will created a slightly rounded surface with the highest point being centered. The cork will float to the highest point and will stay centered allowing you to complete the cork challenge.

Make This A Science Project:

Try different items that float. Try adding dish soap to see if it changes the surface tension. Try different shaped glasses.
