Cork Challenge Easy Science Experiment
In this fun and easy science experiment for kids, we’re going to take on a cork challenge and see if we can keep a cork centered in a glass of water and away from the edge.
Materials:
- Cork
- Glass
- Water
- Teaspoon
Instructions:
- Fill the glass nearly full with water.
- Do your best to get the cork to float in the center of the glass without touching the edge.
- You can even blow on the cork to try and keep it centered.
- Eventually the cork will hit the side of the glass.
- Now add water a teaspoon at a time and observe what happens.

How it Works:
As you add small amounts of water to the glass, the surface tension will rise above the rim of the glass. This will created a slightly rounded surface with the highest point being centered. The cork will float to the highest point and will stay centered allowing you to complete the cork challenge.
Make This A Science Project:
Try different items that float. Try adding dish soap to see if it changes the surface tension. Try different shaped glasses.
