Can An Egg Float Kitchen Science Experiment

In this fun and easy kitchen science experiment for kids, we’re going to see if we can alter the density of water and make an egg float.

Materials:

  • Egg
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Tall drinking glass

Instructions:

  1. Fill the glass about halfway with water and carefully place the egg in the water.
  2. Observe what happens.
  3. Remove the egg.
  4. Now add six or eight tablespoon of salt to the water. Stir until dissolved. Some of the salt may settle to the bottom of the glass.
  5. Return the egg to the glass and observe what happens.

How it Works:

A fresh egg will not float in water as the water is not dense enough for the egg to float. By adding salt to the water, we increased the water’s density which allows the egg to float.

Make This A Science Project:

Try adding sugar instead of salt. Try grapes. Try different liquids.
