Balloon Speakers Easy Science Experiment

In this fun and easy experiment, we’re going to demonstrate how to amplify sound and discuss compressed air molecules by creating balloon speakers.

Materials:

  • Balloon

Instructions:

  1. Inflate the balloon and tie it off to secure the air inside.
  2. Hold the balloon to your ear.
  3. Lightly tap the balloon with your finger.
  4. The sound will be louder than you may expect.

How it Works:

Even though you are only tapping gently on the balloon your ears can hear the noise loudly. When you inflated the balloon you trapped and compressed the air molecules within the balloon making them closer to one another. Since the air molecules within the balloon are packed closer together, they turn into a much greater conductor of sound waves when compared to the normal air surrounding you.

Make This A Science Project:

Add more or less air to the balloon to see if there are any changes in the amplification of sound. Try different sizes of balloons. Try balloons made of different materials.
