Fuquay-Varina Elementary is our Spotlight School of the Week

Fuquay-Varina Elementary School

GRADE: 2nd
PROGRAM: Sound Surprise
Scientist: Max Fry

My day started off a little hectic at Fuquay-Varina because as I was walking into the building a fire drill had just begun! So I quickly walked right back out of the building with all the students and teachers. After everything was all clear, I was finally able to head to the 2nd grade hallway and began my day! Even after the chaos of a fire drill at the start of school, students in my first class were attentive and ready to learn about sound. I was pleasantly surprised to find many students already had previous knowledge about sound waves, volume, and pitch. But even with their prior knowledge, they were still surprised by being splashed with the tuning fork, which is always such a fun activity.
My classes throughout the day could not get enough of the water splashing and always begged for more. I would have to remind them that we have so many more activities so we can’t be splashing ourselves with water the whole time! As the day progressed, each class enjoyed learning about how sound travels through different mediums and also how the human ear processes the sounds around us. We made tympanic membranes and the students were amazed at the vibrations we could create with our tuning forks. Making sound slime at the end of the lesson is another favorite of the students and I was impressed by how big the bubbles some of them were able to blow! Overall I had a great time at Fuquay-Varina, and I look forward to returning and having more Science Fun with the 2nd grade!
